MENTEES
How
do I find a mentor?
Individuals
who are interested in becoming a Certified Auditory-Verbal
Therapist® will need to find an individual willing
to be a mentor during their training process.
Any therapist, who is an active Cert. AVT® in good
standing is eligible to serve as a mentor. To find a
Cert. AVT® in your area, please refer to the Locate
a Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist® page
of the Academy’s website.
What
if there isn't a Cert. AVT® in my area?
If
there is not a suitable mentor in your area, you may
send videos or CDs of your sessions to a mentor who
can then review them and provide you with feedback and
guidance.
Can
my mentor determine if I am eligible to sit for the
exam?
No,
only the Auditory-Verbal Certification Committee can
determine who is eligible to sit for the exam. If you
have questions about your eligibility, please contact
the Auditory-Verbal
Certification Committee directly. The Committee
will accept inquiries about eligibility only from the
candidates and not from mentors.
Do
I have to pay my mentor?
The
decision of whether to charge for providing mentoring
is left up to the individual mentor. We provide this
service free of charge, while others require a fee for
providing this service.
MENTORS
What
is my role as a mentor?
The
role of the mentor is to counsel and guide candidates
to prepare them to sit for the exam and for their video
submission. Mentors need to review the Application
Packet, and ensure adherence to the Principles of
Auditory-Verbal Practice®. Additionally, when reviewing
therapy sessions with a candidate, it is highly recommended
that the mentor utilize Attachment D: Cert AVT Supervisors
Evaluation Form. This form provides more in-depth feedback
and guidance to potential exam candidates.
Do
I have to use the Standardized Curriculum to prepare
for the exam?
No.
While certainly useful in preparing candidates for the
exam, you are not required to use the document produced
by the Auditory-Verbal International Inc. entitled "Standardized
Curriculum".
Should
I advocate on behalf of my mentee?
No.
The role of the mentor is to prepare a candidate to
sit for the exam, not to advocate for them with any
committees of the Academy. The Auditory-Verbal Certification
Committee will only address inquiries, questions, and
requests made from candidates themselves, and not their
mentors.
Can
I determine my mentee's eligibility to sit for the exam?
No.
The Auditory-Verbal Certification Committee is the body
that has been granted authority to determine whether
a candidate is eligible to sit for the exam.
May
I charge for my mentoring services?
Yes.
Individuals are permitted, but not required, to charge
for their services as a mentor. The decision of whether
or not to charge for this service and the actual fee
charged is left up to the individual therapist.
